Excellently staged and you may wisely dialogued, it will have no higher complications from inside the lifestyle off their extremely unsightly identity.” [ 8 ]

The new film’s blogger and you can director, Robert Rossen, creates good multidimensional chess video game, to have mortal stakes, ranging from Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever cousin (Nina Foch) worked during the gambling enterprise and old an excellent corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh cast’s suavely regulated body language out-of love and menace, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you can smartly cocky images (and his governmental conscience) get this pugnacious but really detailed spectacle an invisible antique of category.” [ ten ]

Cobb, because an authorities inspector, and within the rating . As the area comes after a common pattern, the new characterizations is fresh and the performances good enough to help you overbalance. Dialogue was terse and you can topical, preventing the emotional, phoney touching. Unusual camera basics come along on occasion to intensify appeal and you can temporarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay of the Robert Rossen, doubling given that director-scripter, and you may Milton Holmes, new creator and you will associate manufacturer, as well as supports rendering it a flaccid creation.” [ eleven ]

Evelyn Keyes plays the favorable absolutely nothing lady who brings about the finest in him and you can Ellen Drew ‘s the sleek and you can slinky vixen just who gets your into jams.
